Something I came across this morning that made me pause…
Discogs posted an article with a list of the Saddest Albums of All Time. These were the most notable entries for me:
Pastel Blues – Nina Simone
Blackstar – David Bowie
Berlin – Lou Reed
Unknown Pleasures – Joy Division
Dummy – Portishead
Faith – The Cure
A Moon Shaped Pool – Radiohead
The list won’t remain on their front page for long but what are the ones that resonate with you, and do you agree with Blackstar being on the list? The list is also changing, I guess as the popularity of the albums change.
Excerpts from the two I agree with the most:
Blackstar
by David Bowie
“…the final statement of one of the most important artists in history. Blackstar isn’t just sad — it’s an artist composing his own farewell, making peace with the inevitable, and leaving behind one last message.”
“Look up here, I’m in heaven
I’ve got scars that can’t be seen
I’ve got drama, can’t be stolen
Everybody knows me now“
Pastel Blues
by Nina Simone
“…Pastel Blues doesn’t just express sadness; it immerses you in it, turning pain into something beautiful, haunting, and impossible to forget. The record reaches its climax with the firestorm finale, “Sinnerman“ a song that feels like a desperate chase—running both from and toward something monumental.”
